Haiti: Political Leaders Honor Former President Jovenel Moïse During Memorial Mass

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Members of the political party Les Engagés pour le Développement (EDE), led by former Prime Minister Claude Joseph, joined several political figures on Monday for a memorial mass honoring the late President Jovenel Moïse, whose assassination continues to shape Haiti’s political landscape.

The religious ceremony was organized as part of an effort to commemorate the former head of state and encourage public reflection on one of the most significant events in the country’s recent history. Political leaders, supporters, and invited guests gathered to pay tribute to Moïse and remember his years in office.

Speaking during the event, Claude Joseph, President of EDE’s Strategic Council, said the memorial service was intended to preserve the memory of former President Jovenel Moïse and to remind Haitians of the circumstances surrounding his assassination. He noted that similar commemorative ceremonies are expected to be held in several cities across the country as part of a broader effort to honor the late president’s legacy.

According to Joseph, remembering national leaders and major historical events remains an important civic responsibility. He emphasized that the ceremony was not only about honoring an individual but also about encouraging reflection on Haiti’s democratic institutions and political history.

Former Prime Minister Evans Paul, leader of the KID political party, also addressed attendees during the ceremony. He described the assassination of President Moïse as a major institutional failure, arguing that the country’s security apparatus was unable to prevent the attack despite the protection normally provided to a sitting head of state.

Paul further stated that President Moïse had faced significant political challenges before his death and suggested that his administration had already experienced considerable political isolation. He also reflected on several initiatives launched during Moïse’s presidency, noting that many of those projects were not continued after his assassination.

The memorial mass provided an opportunity for political leaders to revisit the broader implications of the July 2021 assassination, an event that triggered a prolonged period of political uncertainty and institutional instability in Haiti. The killing of President Moïse remains one of the country’s most consequential political events in recent years and continues to influence national debates on governance, justice, and democratic institutions.

While investigations into the assassination have advanced in both Haiti and the United States, political actors continue to express differing views regarding the long-term consequences of the tragedy and the direction of the country since that time.

The ceremony concluded with prayers and moments of remembrance dedicated to the former president. Participants emphasized the importance of preserving historical memory while continuing discussions about Haiti’s democratic future and institutional development.

The memorial reflects ongoing efforts by various political organizations to commemorate former President Jovenel Moïse while encouraging public dialogue about the country’s political evolution and the challenges facing its institutions.
